Australia increases penalties for social media companies to enforce under 16s ban

From the BMJ, 3 July 2026:

Australia is stepping up its attempts to prevent children under 16 from accessing social media, a year on from becoming the first country in the world to enact a ban.

In new moves, the Australian government is targeting social media companies with greater penalties for failing to enforce the ban and giving its e-safety commissioner greater investigative and enforcement powers. Read more (paywall).
